How long will my photos on canvas last?

Photos on canvas: How long will they last

If you are a photographer or a photo collector you no doubt have wondered how long your images will last. As we contemplate this idea we can begin to see how this takes root in the core fundamentals of photography. We capture fleeting moments never to be repeated as time keeps on ticking into the future. So then when we reflect on this it is important to us that our prints look as good as they did the day we printed even 100 years from now if possible.

Is this a realistic expectation? How can one determine the longevity potential of a photo on canvas? To consumers the importance of this question grows when money is being paid for photo canvas prints.

The barometer by which these questions are answered consist of a few variables.
Not everyone lives in the same environment so then obviously, images will be displayed under differing circumstances. Some display areas will have more or less light, moister, ext. Some images will be displayed under glass others not under glass. Some framed, some unframed. These are what we consider environmental conditions that have a bearing on the longevity of a photo on canvas. The other factors consist of the materials that are used to create the photo on canvas.

Wilhelm Imaging Research Inc. is considered by most to be the company that has made the largest contribution to understanding “Print Permanence”. "Display Permanence Ratings" is a term I first heard coined by this company to describe a number of tests that can be used in a relative way to determine the longevity of prints on display. Wilhelm Imaging Research Inc is a third party company and as such, they are not in the business of manufacturing printers or printing materials but rather, they are a research company dedicated to research that is objective and non partial. In their test environments they expose prints to light, humidity, ozone, and other elements. By means of their testing they have shown that quality inks, quality canvas, quality printers and finally quality sealers, used in connection with one another can result in photo canvas prints with life expectancies ranging between 60 and 142 years without "noticeable fading". The test environments that contributed to this knowledge consisted of these constant features. Twelve hours of light a day with an exposure brightness of 450 Lux. temperatures fixed at 75 degrees Fahrenheit with the humidity being 60%. These test environments are common in many household display areas.

Professionals and consumers alike benefit by information like this.
It is then information like this that puts responsibility upon print makers to be educated.
Accordingly print shops need to choose canvases that are archival and that are backed by the company that manufactures the canvas with a guarantee that the canvas will outlast the inks that are used to print on them.

In addition the inks must be archival with a tried and true reputation like Epson Ultra Chrome K3™ inks.

Sealers should have UV protecting properties. The sealer should also encapsulate the inks protecting them from ozone. It should also be water resistant or even water proof. Although I do not recommend trying the following with a purchased canvas, at present I am using a sealer that is so water resistant that when I hold the canvas under the faucet for ten second the water just rolls off without noticeable effects to the canvas.

All things considered ZaZaGallery strives to stay abreast of the ever emerging changes in the printing industry and so then we can confidently offer a photo on canvas product with a life expectancy of 100 years when displayed under reasonable conditions.

Myths about Printing pictures on canvas

“I would put my pictures on a canvas print,” one well-known photographer friend once told me, “but it’s too expensive, takes too long, and I can’t afford the loss in quality for all my detailed shots.”

For some reason, people are still under the impression that printing photos on canvas is a costly endeavor which takes weeks to complete. Fifteen, twenty—even ten years ago—that may have been the case. Like all technology, however, canvas photos have become an increasingly economical choice, and as computer technology increased, so did the abilities of technicians to get your photos on canvas. Now with digital cameras, printing on canvas is no more expensive than printing on high-quality photo paper. In many instances, it’s even cheaper.

Here are some of the common myths about printing on canvas, and the truth of the matter.

Myth 1: Printing pictures on canvas is way too expensive for me!

False. Ten years ago, it was impossible to find a quality business which could print your photos on canvas for less than $100-200. That’s true. Now, however, thanks to the increased technology and the increased skills of those who dedicate themselves to the art of canvas printing, high-quality canvas prints can be purchased under $50. At ZaZaGallery, for example, you can purchase canvas prints on museum-quality material starting at only $25, well within the average range charged by photo printing and framing establishments to put your pictures on traditional materials.

Myth 2: If I get my photo printed on canvas, it will take forever to get it back.

False. Once again, ten years ago this may have been true. To take a photograph from film, develop it, and then transfer it to canvas was a painstaking and lengthy process. Thanks to digital cameras, those steps are now largely simplified, lowering the turnaround time of your canvas prints and passing the savings on to you. Many people who order photos printed on canvas can expect an average time of one week to pass before their order is shipped; at the aforementioned ZaZaGallery, that time is considerably less, as they promise to ship your canvas photos to you within 2-3 business days.

Myth 3: Canvas prints look tacky. You miss out on quality, and you can tell it’s just a picture printed on there.

False. When you look at a normal photograph, are you concerned people can tell it’s just a picture printed on paper? No! Because the material it’s printed on is high-quality, and the technicians have taken painstaking care to ensure that photos have the best quality possible. Canvas printing is no different. With a professional canvas print, your picture will look like it was weaved straight into the material—not printed on top of it. Professionals skilled in the art of printing, stretching, and mounting canvas prints also make sure to utilize patience, deft fingers, and years of experience to make sure your photo is printed, lined up, and stretched perfectly. Using the carpenter motto of “measure twice, cut once” you can rest assured that your photo’s size, positioning, and quality will be checked and double checked before a single staple enters the frame.

As you can see, canvas printing isn’t quite what most people still think it is. Once considered a format fit only for artists and the upper-class, the lower prices, quicker turnaround, and increased quality of canvas printing gives all photographers a canvas to paint their artistic expression and memories on.

So if you or your friends are deciding not to print your photos on canvas because of those purveying myths, do yourselves both a favor and remember that they’re just that: myths.
